If you thought the Ms Pacman cocktail arcade game was at the World Video Game Hall of Fame, you’d be incorrect. It’s been on the shortlist for entry — it had been about the shortlist both this year and last year. It still hasn’t made the cut yet, though.
In fact, zero 1980s arcade games joined the Hall of Fame this year. Nevertheless, the judges did choose a timeless 1990s arcade game. This was in addition to games console games, a mid-70s text-based adventure game, and a game which has been packaged free from the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Classic 1980s (and Pre-1980s) Arcade Games on the Shortlist but Which Missed the Cut
These are some of the great 1980s arcade games that got cut at the final hurdle this season:
• Ms Pac-Man — a finalist for 2 Decades now so, hopefully, it will get the recognition it deserves in future years
• Centipede — the 1981 award winning classic from Atari that provided gameplay like Space Invaders but with bugs Rather than spaceships
• Asteroids — the brilliant multidirectional shooter published by Atari in 1979 which was one of the very first arcade games to Attain widespread popularity
What about the video games that did get inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame this past year?
• Mortal Kombat — this is the only arcade game to get in the World Video Game Hall of Fame at 2019. Through the years, various titles and indoor jungle gym (https://www.twitarcade.com) versions of the game have been published on a range of different platforms. The first four incarnations, but beginning in 1992, were arcade just.
• Microsoft Solitaire — packaged in the Windows operating system, it has been mechanically installed on billions of computers across the world. Since 1990, it has helped workplace workers pretend to be busy and is now played 35 billion times annually.
• Super Mario Kart — the fun and popular racing game which was first published in 1992. It features characters from the Mario Bros video game franchise and continues to be published on several consoles and platforms.
• Colossal Cave Adventure — an obscure (compared to another huge video game titles mentioned in this article) text-based adventure game published in 1976. To perform it, you write commands and there are no graphics. The aim is to locate treasures and resolve puzzles.
